Micron Electronics Profit Soars On Growth in Memory Business A WSJ.COM News Roundup NAMPA, Idaho -- Micron Electronics Inc. said profit soared 68% in the fiscal fourth quarter, easily beating expectations, on strength in its SpecTek memory business. The personal-computer maker posted net income of $23.1 million, or 24 cents a diluted share, up from $13.7 million, or 14 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial were expecting a profit of nine cents a share. But some analysts were disappointed that most of the growth came from the memory business, and not Micron's personal-computer systems and Web-hosting units. The company's shares traded down $1.50, or 12%, to $10.88 at the 4 p.m. close Tuesday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Revenue rose 50% to $500 million in the quarter, which ended Aug. 31, from $333.1 million in the year-earlier period. In a conference call early Tuesday with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Jim Stewart said higher income from the SpecTek business and fewer losses in the company's PC operations were the main reasons for the company's growth. SpecTek operations had sales of $205 million for the quarter, compared with $63 million in the year-ago period. Micron's personal-computer business sales were $284 million for the fourth quarter, compared with $270 for the fourth quarter last year. PC gross margin was 11.1% for the fourth quarter, compared to 17.6% a year ago. The company said the decrease in gross margin percentage in the most recent fourth quarter was primarily due to the mix impact of the lower-margin VelocityNet Direct, or VND, initiative, and to building market position in consumer retail. PC unit shipments for the quarter rose 29% over the fourth quarter of fiscal 1999. These increases were primarily due to the success of VND, the company's retail-direct business. Revenue from the company's HostPro Internet and Web hosting business increased to $11.4 million for the fourth quarter. Monthly average churn for hosting accounts was about 2% in the quarter.
