Re: do you feel DELL has the in-house expertise to pull off a home grown NAS product

I think the acquisition of ConvergeNet certainly gives
them access to the resources to combine with their
previous RAID storage development activities
and knowledge base acquired over the last 6-7 years.

But I dont think they intend to compete as much with
EMC and NTAP right now as much as they intend to
compete with IBM, HWP and CPQ.

Dell has also spun of a separate storage division
which is uncharacteristic given the assumed sub 1B
in annual revenues. They usually incubate business
under the umbrella of a larger business before cutting
them loose. How this meshes with ConvergeNet at the
moment I don't quite understand. But, I think this
move in conjunction with doing the unheard of
(buying a company) signifies how serious they
are about this market and it's opportunities.

Also, ConvergeNet is reported to have it's own
'Storage Domain Management' software suite that
lets a company centrally manage resources in
hertogeneous environments. Dell now owns this
and has a jumpstart on a key building block.

Maybe this parting of ways is a sign that Dell will
soon announce new and competitive products from the
acquisition. Dell still plans to ship NTAP's new
F840 appliance for now however.

But as I mentioned before, Dell is a newcomer here
and has a long way to go. But I'm betting they
get positioned to garner a significant share of
future growth in the low to mid range.
