No no no....not once did I extol the virtues of this system. You are reading in what you want to see. There were two points in my posts and two points only.

1. That the majority of the social spending does not go to the poor but to the middle class.

2. That most poor recipients of government programs do in fact leave them and become tax payers.

Not once did I say that this was the right or correct or even the best way. If I show cynicism or gallows humor as you called it it comes from a lifetime of trying to resolve in my mind what looks to me as an unresolveable situation. You are a physicist you should know that two things can be both right and wrong at the same time. This is how I see it. The government spending tries to resolve one set of problems and creates another set or even perpetuates the first set. Yet I don't have an answer for the first set of problems that is any better than theirs. You think you do and maybe you do, but you haven't convinced me yet that the resolution is in not trying to resolve the problems in the first place.
