NEC-Hitachi DRAM Joint Venture Named 'Elpida Memory'
September 28, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The NEC-Hitachi joint DRAM manufacturing company has its official name finally after nine months since formation.

Provisionally called NEC-Hitachi Memory, Inc., established on Dec. 20, 1999, is now Elpida Memory, Inc.

"Elpida" is a name created by combining "elpina" which means "hope" in the Greek language and "d" which is associated with "DRAM" and "Dynamic."

Elpida Memory was created by merging and consolidating the DRAM divisions of NEC Corp. and Hitachi, Ltd. By January 2001, the two companies will transfer all of its DRAM-related business to Elpida Memory, and the existing DRAM products of both companies will be brought together under the uniform brand of "Elpida." Also, after introducing the 0.13-micron rule, DRAM designs will be made common and shared, so that the products can be made in any plant of either company. Samples are ready for manufacturing.

NEC, Hitachi and the joint venture decided on Elpida as the official name at a fairly early point, but it took months for them to make the final decision for a number of reasons involving an domain name www.elpida.com. The domain name was already registered by an unrelated company in the United States. However, the name Elpida Memory survived to be official as its trademark registration had been done already, and the companies chose not to take the trouble of going over the trademark registration again for a different name.

According to GartnerGroup Japan KK, NEC ranks fourth in terms of DRAM market share in 1999 with 8.8 percent, and Hitachi is seventh with 4.8 percent. Their combined share will make Elpida Memory's at 13.6 percent. That is, Elpida will take the fourth position with 13.6 percent market share among world DRAM makers after Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (20.7 percent in 1999), Korea's Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (19.3 percent), and Micron Technology Inc. of the United States (14.4 percent).

Elpida Memory plans to hold a press conference on Sept. 28, 2000, to present its business strategy.
