A constant theme in Hemingway's novels was the importance of gathering - or maintaining - ones' 'grace under pressure.' He considered this quality, above all others, as important; one might say, almost divine. I think if ole Papa were here today, he'd see that quality not only in the man-vs-nature Londonesque scenarios (bull fighters, big game hunters, etc.) that he depicted, but also in types of situations you've described.
