Having everything stored on tape is perhaps more convenient than using dozens of sticks of flash memory.

With existing microdisks of 340MB and shortly forthcoming 500MB and 1GB capacities that fit into compact flash type II slots, the motivation for tape seems questionable, especially considering the random access quality of disk.

When flash sticks develop multi-GB capacities, these other methods may fall by the wayside. Any ideas how long that will take?

Not before the end of the year!!!! There is also an issue of what that kind of capacity will cost compared to $500 list for the 1GB microdisk.
