FYI, Merrill issued a note a few minutes ago in response to the Sanford Bernstein downgrade.

Basically, they said that even though they also expect spending growth to moderate, they felt that this was already in both their and the Streets numbers, and they'd buy CSCO on this weakness.

Instead of a big blow off in stocks we got the 30 day continuous version. Perhaps the big blowoff effect is already behind us and we get this market roaring for earnings season. Where is the bad news? What do I miss? Where is the recession? All i have seen is Greenspan pumping cash into the system, combined world action over oil and the euro beginning to work and probably the fewest earnings warnings in quite awhile. This bounce may be purely technical but it may become quite something else next week and beyond.

as to be expected from a bear like me...I think this is a bit of short covering, a bit of tape painting for the quarter end, and a bit of dip buying and daytrading. It's funny how as MSFT is breaking down and CSCO lost $55 they powers that be pull the iraq oil trick out of the bag to create this rally. Truly incredible how the market discounts the slowing telecom spending news. I wonder how far this rally will carry us?
