Thank heavens, that was the sorriest Olympic coverage I've ever seen.

How many hours of boxing can one person endure, when we know water ballet is waiting?

Ted, Here's a Howard Kurtz-type scenario:

When reporting Merrill Lynch's ratings upgrade of Gateway today, do you think it would be more balanced if CNBC also noted that the analyst was LOWERING his price target for the SECOND time in three weeks. On Sept 13, the same analyst lowered his price target on Gateway from $85 to $75 when the stock was at $63. Now less than three weeks later he has lowered the price target to $65. BTW, the $65 price target makes GTW ineligible for a ML Buy rating if it trades above $54.17.

It is not updated for today's actions, but here's a recent history of ML's actions on GTW:

The music cnbc plays in the afternoon, as they are going into commercials; it makes me want to drink beer.

Is this intentional?

Thank you.

Ted

Close friend of mine wanted to write a letter to CNBC. I told her we have a direct pipeline to you via SI. Here are her comments.

==========================================================

Dear Ted:

As Senior Activities Coordinator for a residential group home for mentally handicapped men, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for CNBC. Your graphics-rich, content-free programming is perfect for entertaining the residents for hours at a time. No sex, no violence and plenty of colorful, meaningless pictures. Your recent changes to the graphics - adding several doo-dads, blinking arrows and extensive use of the CNBC logo along with the inspirational music - certainly have not gone unnoticed by the men (although it has resulted in a few men becoming overexcited and several have had seizures).

Although I wish I could provide only positive feedback, there are several areas of concern:

(1) Several of the idiot savants have an uncanny knack for detecting …uh...shall we say, prevarication. In those circumstances, they become uncontrollably agitated and must be medicated. In order to cope with this, to date we have simply used the "mute" button whenever Al Goldman, Erik Gustaffson or Joe Battipaglia have come on the show or when Maria touts Micron Technology, but the other residents complain bitterly. Any suggestions?
(2) My earlier comment about no sex on the show was not totally accurate. Whenever Maria uses that slutty, come-hither voice, the TV Room quickly degenerates into a 30 man circle jerk. The fellows have seen this act before on those late-night 1-900 sex advertisements, and they know what is being sold. We don't want to use straightjackets on the men during her 2:00 show - could she clean it up a little?

Anyway, besides those minor things, your programming is great, the fellows love it and it has made my job incredibly easy.

Thanks

Cree Disputes Broadcast Statement on CNBC
DURHAM, N.C., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE - news) commented that CNBC falsely reported today in its Squawk Box segment that Cree had ``warned'' of reduced margins in the future. Cree has issued no such ``warning.''

As stated by Cree's CFO, Cynthia Merrell, in the company's earnings conference call yesterday, when asked about gross margins going forward, she stated, ``We have not changed our range of low- to mid-50's percent for gross margins going forward. This is the same range as before.'' Gross margins for the first quarter of fiscal 2001 remained at 55 percent, unchanged from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000.

Dear CNBC, I don't disparage you and enjoy watching you very much. I believe you provide valuable service to everyone in the business community with a mixture of hard news, humor and great guests but just tell me one thing, Did David Faber break the news on Honeywell yesterday or did David Faber break the news on Honeywell yesterday? I can't remember what you said? Did David Faber break the news on Honeywell yesterday?

CNBC has become so obsessed with golf, Regis, sound effects(truck air horns, horse noises, etc.), wrestlers, road trips, underwear(yes, men's underwear was a highlight this morning of Faber and Kernan's dialogue), pop/rock stars(give the Britney Spears thing a rest), nicknames, celebrities, and on, and on, and on, that it seems that the point and purpose of CNBC's/Squawk's very existence has been lost in the mess. Kernan needs to be reeled in by management as he has gone too far afield and is taking Carl Quintenilla, Steve Frank, and other very talented newbies down the WRONG ROAD. Even his buddy David Faber who sometimes sits in disbelief of Kernan's antics may, unfortunately, be too far gone. Kernan's stream of consciousness drivel is redundant and monotonous. He was at his best about 3-5 years ago when he didn't know it, i.e. before he received all the notoriety. Squawk Box has become an Oprah Winfrey, Regis, Letterman hybrid that imho, doesn't work. Pleeeeeeeez ask management to tighten the reigns on him(Kernan)a little and return to the CNBC we used to know. Btw, Maria reported CPQ's estimated revs for Q3 wrong(3 billion$ short)all morning. Ted,

Kudos to CNBC for their coverage of the Primedia-About.com merger today.

Here's some inside scoop for you and the CNBC crew: what Primedia was *really* after was About's Minor League Baseball site...it was the "hidden Crown Jewel" that Primedia was after :) You may be familiar with it's Guide:

A suggestion to CNBC's promotional/adv. dept. Why not design white t-shirts, consistent with the "World On A String" spot, featuring the very colorful CNBC ticker on the chest. Could be used as give-aways to phone callers and passed out on road trips. El

Ms. Cho, (who reports the news on CNBC) Why is it so "unbelievable" that Al Gore played some football while campaigning? I have never seen you "gush" over anything GW did..... Your prejudice is transparent to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear. Yogi

Tell your colleagues that stupidity doesn't count.
Palm Beach needs to stop complaining...punch the hole next to the name, and that's all there is to it.

We had punch ballots, also, and had enough sense to figure out the hole next to the name is the one you punch.

The only "do over" there is in politics is voting every four years.
