Absolutism by it's nature condemns "others" not holding the absolute belief to being really really totally wrong. And that gives the person holding the absolute belief a lot of latitude to despise this wrong headed creature that does not believe in the same thing. If you accept relativism it's hard to get worked up enough about anything to do much harm- name me some relativists who started a jihad, or an inquisition. Please. ANY relativists. I can't think of any.

As soon as you take positive action, you're become an absolutist. Getting along generally includes toleration, a relativist principle. In order to be tolerant you have to accept that other points of view are valid. As a practical matter, it is hard to accept all view points. That's why laws exist. Further, some people insist on laws that restrict the behavior of adults that govern impersonal or consenting behavior ( e.g., drug, morals and sex laws.) These arise out of the notion of the "public good" from paternalism. They don't stop there. They restrict behavior by other countries. This really starts to look like absolutism when national policy starts reflecting a core set of values not universally held especially by countries that have their own set of absolute values. Sounds like a sure way to have conflict. The extreme of relativism is isolationism. THAT has its own set of problems of course. I don't know the formula for finding the balance, except exercising moderation in all things, including your relativism!!
