Merrill Lynch in defense of PCs in the wake of the Apple warning. Note mention of laptops sales gaining vs. desktops, sounds like Merrill thinks it's big time. SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR INTEL TODAY! They did something right getting those PIII speedsteps out. AMDroids so cocksure the last few days what with all the negative stuff on Intel. But, you still have to be there with the right products at the right time. Athlon and Duron desktop chips may not be it. I won't mention servers.

PC retailers OK, Merrill
--12:07 pm - By Tomi Kilgore
In a research note to clients, Merrill Lynch gave a number of reasons why the earnings warning was "not negative" for PC retailers. Analyst Peter Caruso said the retailers stop ordering Apple PCs early in the sales cycle since the company does not give price protection. Also, advanced warnings on new products are not given, so retailers often wait to order. He noted that Best Buy (BBY: news, msgs) does not stock Apple PCs and Circuit City (CC: news, msgs) didn't stock them last year. BBY is down $3.31 to $62.50 and CC is up 13 cents at $22.81. Caruso also pointed out that PC demand has been shifting from desktops to laptops, which is where most of the sales growth is coming for PC retailers.

Ten,

I'm not paid to be on SI.

Do they deduct SI time from your paycheck?
