Stitch,
Thanks for your summary. I must say it gives me a little more confidence.
<<another reason I felt bullish on Komag/HMTT which is already a 40 per-center from my entry point.)>>
I noticed, nice one.

<< The lagging demand for PCs going into the fourth quarter is a mirage IMHO, or at worst, a point-in-time aberration. >>
I think you are correct but I will be listening closely to Dell, CPQ, and AMD as they comment on coming quarter. Microsoft will get a lot of attention as well for an indication of corporate demand for Win2000 and associated software in 2001 (and thus spending plans).

Fuel Cells? Doing a lot of reading but just starting out on learning curve and trying to learn something about biotechnology concurrently--- tall order.

Thanks for Great Wall tidbit, I'd wondered about them and Conner,

Paul

Stitch,
Thanks for your comments. I was startled to read, <<MKE will exit over time and turn all manufacturing back to the newly combined HDD-Maxtor who will re-up their idled work in Dalien China IMO.>>

I have always believed that MKE made money on this business. I also believed that their link to Panasonic would assure that they would remain in this business, as more and more consumer products that Panasonic makes use hard drives. I also think it was LT who said that MKE's initial objections to the MXTR/HDD merger were overcome by giving them equity participation in the merged companies. It seems to me that keeping MKE plus their own capacity would give the company ideal flexibility to adjust to the continuing changing circumstances of the drive sector.

Stitch, Would love to hear any of the inside scoop on SEG like why no one else has (or was able) to bid for them, what's holding up the deal and whether there's any chance of the deal falling apart at this point. A QNTM/MXTR combination would be an incredible windfall for mgmt and Silver Lake.
The more I think about HDD buying MXTR, the less sense it makes. How could HDD possibly justify it? Could it be a merger of equals? Combined market caps works out to about $2 bil which is close to the business week figure. -Z

Stitch: Re; P.S. Are you (or anyone reading) looking into fuel cells?.

Your ps prompted me out of lurk mode. I and a few others have been following the fuel cell industry for some time. I currently track the following: BLDP, FCEL,DCH, MHTX, MKTY, PLUG and SATC.

I'm particularly interested in watching the development of the microcell and its application into portable electronic devices.

A post of note:

At this point I am becoming more interested in MHTX for their involvement in microcells. FWIW they are also involved in holographic media for data storage.
