HDSL is a replacement of PCM T1. It is robust, reaches further without repeaters and does not "pollute" the surrounding pairs. HDSL is symmetrical.

HDSL2 requires a single pair and is symmetrical. As you know the telcos are running out of pairs since they are selling second lines to deliver dial tone while one is using the Internet.

HDSL2 is very good for the telcos: To sell more leased lines capitalizing on their copper pairs. Imagine when 3G comes along and we will have all those operators scrambling for more bandwidth to connect their Base Radio stations to the the Base Station Controllers? They would be buying HDSL2 by the truck load.

These are not dead. What is dead is ADSL as a replacement of dial up modems.
