To re-hash history, Dell made an agreement with Data General to sell some servers, but mostly their line of small to mid size storage (Clarion I think). They were gaining market share. Then EMC bought Data General. Dell had never made a purchase of a company and I don't think they even bid on Data General.

Well they were left with small scale server attached storage devices. Then they bought ConvergeNet. This company is reputed to have fiber-channel designs for storage, but they had no storage management software, so it's delayed. In the mean time they made a deal with NTAP and then dropped the deal. In the mean time ConvergeNet is supposed to release something next year, which in Dell's case could mean anything from January to late February (unless they mean end of next year which would really be too late).

However, if Dell ever gets a product out, they could produce in quantities, configuration, and cost that could rock the storage world.

Storage, dell investments, servers, services, and consulting makes Dell, and CPQ still companys to stay with. Price will come with performance.
Saying Dell is only a boxmaker is underestimating the company by a mile.
