I think you folks are making a big mistake (one I don't think Microsoft itself is making, BTW) to pooh-pooh Linux and its progeny. The point is that some of the free stuff IS demonstrably "of quality." And being able to "afford" an inefficient computer aligned with an obsolete computing paradigm isn't the issue. I could afford to be wasteful in a lot of things, but why would I?

Ashok Kumar, the respected PC industry analyst at US Bancorp Piper Jaffray who made prescient calls recently on Intel and Dell, says he expects PC box sales will continue to rise at close to their historic rate of 16% over the past decade. "There's no reason for the long-term trend to slow," he says.

From the Barron's article this week. This guy is so accurate and made great calls on Intel and Dell. He saying PC sales will continue to grow at historic rates is just increadible endorsement.
