GST, I think there was much more air pollution in urban regions in the US in the 1940's 50,s and 60's. Until air and water quality laws were passed. At the time anti-environmentalists claimed the laws would cause depressions, kill prosperity, etc.... The sort of claims the idiot party makes every 4 years. But it turned out that strong environmental regulations did not harm the economy, they just cleaned the environment. I don't know what China's problems are, but nearly everywhere else most standard-of-living problems are political, not economic.

By the way, since you've been in Hawaii for a while, has it been getting warmer there lately ? I know Michigan winters are much less severe in the past 10 years than before. A few months ago a family moved on our block from Hawaii. I wonder how the mother (who looks like a native Hawaiian) will like winter here.
