RDM, Yes, the reduction of other extraneous tasks is critical. Disk image also reduces danger of underrun.
Network traffic can easily disrupt data flow to the point where the cache empties, but some recent drives have as much as 4M cache and one hopes they could tolerate this a lot better, esp on a 100base network where a small aperture can keep a 4 M cache filled. Even at 8X it is emptied only at ~1.2 M per second.

<< I have used CDR (4x)made by HP, Pioneer, and Philips. I prefer to burn at 1/2 of full speed (2X) even though it is slower. The CDs burned at below peak speed just seem to be more capadible with CD players. CD-R disks are more error prone than normal silver CDs. The seem to have less margin.

I've had problems with cd's being less compatible with cheaper CD equipment, and I found if I use TDK disks I can burn at 8x and never have problems, while if I use generic brands I often can only play the cd on my computer, and some stereos.

Somehing weird with it is that I only get errors with my portable CD player when it's on anti-shock... the memory gets corrupted and it can takes about a minute before it finds back the track. When I turn off the anti-shock, it reads 4X burnt CD without a skip.
