OTOT

Dave,

Drug use needs to be discouraged and controlled indirectly.
Making them illegal increases the street price and make peddling them in the streets a lucrative business. We should have learned from the American experience with prohibition. I understand your concerns but we have created powerful drug cartels with our current policies and I suspect that the drug using population is far higher than it would have otherwise been without the war on drugs. Moreover the prisons are becoming a gulag. Something needs to be don e differently.

I am certain you would not want your misguided friends executed for drug use as is done in Singpore. If we allowed that where would we get candidates for president or congress. <G>

<<If keeping them illegal is even a small deterrent for some people and keeps from trying drugs (like me, though it wasn't the only reason), I'd like to try and limit the number of people who's lives get messed up. And this includes innocent victims as well -- it's bad enough having to worry about drunk drivers (and some stoned drivers) on the road already -- how many more stoned drivers would I have to worry about if drugs are legalized?>>

It undoubtedly is a deterrant for some. By legal I did not get to fully outline my plan. To get them free, you would have to register as an addict or get a prescription. This would immediately take most of the profit out of it. Second, this would take all incentive away from those who try to lure new addicts to drugs for profit. No more "first one is free - just try it - you will like it". No incentive to get anyone hooked when they can register as an addict and get it free.
No more stealing to support habits either.
