There are shortages for both optical and DSL components. These shortages are caused by extreme demand. Growth in optical and DSL is not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are complementary.

DSL is a last mile technology and since it will take many years to pull fiber to every home, DSL will be a necessary stop gap to increase bandwidth to the home. Eventually (10, 15, 20 years....who knows), I expect fiber to be pulled to a majority of homes. But I am probably overly optimistic.

Why do you give somebody from Alcatel any more credibility than representatives from other networking equipment vendors? Do you consider Alcatel to be on the cutting edge and a leader?
