what’s wrong with Barry Manilow? Singer/songwriters with bad voices shouldn't sing their own or anyone's songs. The problem isn't Barry Manilow's voice. He writes the songs but they suck. Dr.Id@someofthebestsingersongwritershavebadvoicesbutsingwell.com

Singer/songwriters with bad voices shouldn't sing their own or anyone's songs. I'm not sure if I agree with that. I think there are plenty of singers (past and present) who have had voices that would not be considered optimal for singing. Bruce Springsteen, who was mentioned in an earlier post, would be an example. His voice is somewhat scratchy, but he's still a wonderful singer (and performer in general) . I don't think it's always the quality of the voice that necessarily makes an appealing or compelling vocalist. I think it has more to do with the singer's talent and musicianship (and what they choose to do with that voice). Van Morrison, Shirley Horn, and Louis Armstrong are other examples that come to mind.
