Michael Gaudet, The fact that Eastman Kodak...

...is having a rough go with the transition to digital will likely have little impact on SanDisk during Q4. First, Kodak announced 3 new digital cameras aimed at the consumer market and will need CompactFlash for bundling. Even if they have poor holiday sales the bundled cards are already purchased and packaged.

If Kodak decreases subsequent orders, then demand for bundled cards may fall. However, after-market sales of CompactFlash will still be robust.

I see 8 (and even 16 MB) private label (bundled) CompactFlash cards as being of diminishing interest to SanDisk. How would they make an 8 MB card CF with the current flash density they are producing. I can't imagine that the "chop-chop" technique (to slice and dice a 256 Mbit chip into four 64 Mbit chips) plus the additional cost of the controller and the card assembly is cost-effective. This is only my impression.

The market dynamics for bundled and after-market sales is touched on in this link...

Michael,

I said earlier this year that...

21¢ + 22¢ +23¢ +24¢ = 90¢

Now Merrill Lynch sets estimates as follows...

From Merrill: SanDisk Corp
(SNDK, $66.75, C-1-1-9)

00E $1.13
01E $1.35

This is why Q3 is pivotal. I think these estimates
are going to be trounced pretty handily. For example,
for 2000 EPS @ $1.13 SNDK would have to retreat to under
30¢/Q for the next two quarters to come in at $1.13/share.
Even if we are flat from Q2 we will earn $1.20/share.

Although seasonality is less of an issue now we are at
capacity it should be recalled that Q4 is traditionally
a good quarter for SanDisk.
