Joe, sorry, I did not understand that. Motherboard support should be there, although it may be limited to OEMs for a while.

I doubt seriously that ServerWorks will be very supportive of AMD chips. If the 760MP ever uses LDT or cLDT for a NUMA style system, ServerWorks has a serious time limit on their lifespan as a company. Assuming that a 760MP chipset with cLDT doesn't sell for much more than $80, then it would be possible to build a 14 way complete Duron system for about what a 4 way Xeon Supermicro motherboard sells for in small quantity. Not that anyone would necessarily do this, mind you, but it would be possible.

Good point about the NVDIA chipset. It could break them out of the gaming market real quick...

Nvidia has done an excellent job producing good products in a timely fashion. Hopefully that work will continue in their foray into the chipset field.

Dear Joe:

The chipsets for AMD with LDT are in the pipeline just further out (AMD 770?). With the LDT architecture, each northbridge would have its own 4 DIMMS. Thus, an 8 way Athlon SMP would have 4 northbridges each with 4 DIMMs or 16 DIMMs total. Even with a northbridge having no CPUs attached can still allow CPUs from other northbridges to see the memory attached to it. Thus a single CPU in an 8 way SMP motherboard could see all 16 DIMMs. The only true downside is the increased latency to the non local DIMMs.

This then allows any number of DIMMs to be in a motherboard just by increasing the number of 2 way northbridges (This is what I think the AMD 770 is). A northbridge with no CPU pins (or one with the internal CPU pins not connected) could be used to increase the size of memory. These memory server chips could contain on chip caches, interleave the memory or any other performance enhancements.

Thus, it is not necessary to build more than 4 DIMMs into a SMP LDT northbridge. It will fall to the motherboard manufacturers to implement this if, and when, it becomes necessary. The larger size DRAM chips may make this unnecessary (36 1Gb chips is 4GB per DIMM). The Hammer series may be the first to really need this LDT NB method.
