To expatiate on my own post, just based on the chart in my last mesage, I think the $125 hit in 1976 looks roughly like the long-term fair value for gold. That would imply that, inflation-adjsuted, gold today should maybe be worth $250 per ounce. Of course, the US is in much better economic shape today than it was in the late 1970s, so perhaps I'm being generous.
