It certainly can. Since the Bride calls the shots she (and her family) typically picks up all the wedding expenses except for the honeymoon and the rehearsal dinner which are the responsibility of the Groom. This is flexible of course, but depending on the level of extravagance, both sides can incur considerable expense. The Bride's expenses, however, can easily run to several times those of the Groom's.
