Here is a message board post I wrote on the Fool Gorilla Game board. I was wondering if anyone here may have comments for me.

If I adopted that approach I would have missed many wonderful nuggets of information from valued correspondents. I can think of many ways to judge a poster's credibility, but never considered their choice of screen name one of them. But since I use an alias, I understand that you will disagree.

John,

I was a bit disappointed to read this:

I wanted to weigh in not on the issue of data mining, but questioning people's integrity.

Unfortunately, someone like Ann Coleman takes a lot of abuse by people on the Internet who assume that everything the Motley Fool does is malicious in nature (Her personal integrity is nothing short of stellar and she has no ill intent in anything that she writes or any analysis she conducts) . The problem is that many of these people do it anonymously. So, I pretty much disregard what anyone says that does not put their real name behind it.

That's why it is easier to accept something that MikeBuckely says whether he agrees with you or not, because ,he is Mike Buckley, and not some coward hiding behind a screen name who would never say the things they say on the Internet is they were in a live, face-to-face forum.

Speaking of questioning people's integrity... You seem to be referring to tekboy. I hope I'm mistaken, because tekboy is a pretty well-respected fellow here (as are you, BTW). If you think he was being malicious, unfair or ad hominem, you should reread his messages.

I, for one, share some of tb's reservations, and I don't think that everything The Motley Fool does is malicious in nature (although I was pretty peeved about their role in the Kennedy assassination).

jd:

With one exception, I have not posted on this thread, but have been lurking awhile, and was surprised to read that you were offended by a discussion taking place here. One of the reasons that IMHO this is the best stock talk thread on the web is that its participants are not afraid to voice their (usually well-considered) opinions about analyses offered by others. To find criticism here of a method of investing that does not tend to be in line with the philosophy espoused by the TFM is certainly to be expected. All comers are certainly adequately warned of this by the MOTHEROFALLFAQS.

I’ve read other posts of yours here and have been favorably impressed and even educated by your knowledge and analytical abilities. And I must say that I’ve never gotten the impression that this thread is in any way anti-Fool -- actually quite to the contrary.

BTW, you’ve got to love the irony. Most of tb’s posts are “G&K Light.” Now he posts a message asking the reader to take pause and think. And he gets slammed. Now that’s funny (dot com).
