"In truth, that's not what was announced at all, and what's really going to happen may have more impact on businesses than on residential Internet users."

elmatador- I read Tom's comments. I read the above. I do not understand the connection? And isn't Tom Nolle's comments all pre- 99-238 ruling by the FCC? A lot has changed since Tom wrote the article back in Nov 99. Why would SBC deploy 25,000 NGDLCs and not go after the consumer? If SBC does not, then they might as well give the business to the cablecos. OR if SBC doesn't go after the subscribers directly, then SBC might as well do some more Covad-SBC partnership moves. Either case is better than giving the business to the true arch enemy of incumbent telcos-- The cablecos.

If you can explain how Pronto is not consumer oriented, I would appreciate it. I've been enjoying your "ADSL is dead," commentary. Not that I fully believe it, but enjoy reading your ideas nonetheless. -MikeM(From Florida)

SBC/LU has nothing to do with Pronto Project for acces: ATM/DSL.
Lu deal involves new network outside SBC and Ameritech territory.
Within SBC/Ameritech and in Pronto Project LU involvement is very minor.
