If they can't compete with "society as a whole" then there is a problem. I wouldn't send my child to public school in the first place. It's unfortunate that the government won't allow for those who can't afford to pay for private education to use vouchers to do so. I guess that's what happens when you have a teachers union calling the shots in Washington protecting quite a few deadbeat "teachers". They ought to be protecting students.

re: The purpose of standardized tests is to make "them" like "us." Hate to butt in, but I don't see that as the purpose of a standardized test. You are supposed to be able to perform at a certain level -- you are just measuring whether people have achieved that level.

Since in math only one answer is correct, you want to ask everyone the same set of questions to avoid the bias that would result by having different versions of the test around. One could always argue that the version that they took was harder that the one taken elsewhere.

We have standardized driving tests. I think that's great too. I like the idea that when I'm driving around my state, all the other drivers, idiots* though they may be, have taken the same test and read the same rule book.

If you can't pass a standardized test, you shouldn't be allowed to move on to the next level. If you fail your driver's test, you should practice more until you take it again. If you fail a standized test in school, you shouldn't move on either.

* "idiot" is defined as anyone driving faster or slower than me at any given time.
