Zeev..

agnostic or an atheistic stand, is still a form of a religious position

I'd call it more of a "spiritual" one.. Otherwise, isn't
what you're saying an oxymoron?

but even an agnostic or an atheistic stand, is still a form of a religious position.

If by religious you mean moral, then I'd agree with you. And many opponents of abortion would also agree that it should not be a federal issue. However, a bigger issue is whether there should be a consensus on how the issue is treated, or whether it should be mandated, as it is now.

Prior to Roe v. Wade there was a strong movement in the direction of liberalizing abortion laws. In fact, one of the most liberal in the country was signed by Spiro Agnew in the late 60's. The Supreme Court took the issue out of the realm of popular opinion. Even quite a few pro-choice advocates disagree with that decision and believe that if as a society we permit abortion (and your own position is a very reasonable one) it should be done with the approval of voters, not on the basis of a very elastic reading of the Constitution.

Zeev, your position is exactly the same as my position, on this issue. I think at least 60% of voters can support this position.
