Joe, <I don't think there is anything specific in the chipset tying it to internal architecture of the CPU. Can you (or Tench) elaborate on what makes present chipsets 32bit specific?>

Nothing really. Intel could have conceivably designed Itanium to support the P6 bus and work with current Xeon chipsets. But of course, the transition to IA-64 provides Intel with the chance to update the old P6 bus into a more robust, higher-bandwidth Itanium bus.

Joe - Re: "Thinking about it more, I think AMD's strategy will turn out to be pretty good. Their 760MP chipset is allegedly going to have LDT connection to southbridge devices."

Allegedly ?

Isn't the 760 MP out yet? It was due in December, 1999 !!

Re: "I bet ClawHammer - the single core version of the Hammer family will be able to use this chipset."

Sure Joe - it makes a LOT OF SENSE to use a 32 bit Chip Set with 32 bit memory controller for a 64 bit CPU. Just think what those 64 bits on the Claw data bus will do when only 32 bits of data arrive !

Oh - and the 32 bit addressing for for a 64 bit processor will REALLY HELP with large data structures - NOT !!!

Re: "Sledgehammer - the dual core version of the Hammer family will have an integrated Northbridge and an LDT connection. It will be able to to work in 760 MP chipset minus its northbridge."

Gee....you know SO MUCH about all these AMD chips that aren't due out for another 15 months - do you have a direct line to Jerry Sanders - or do you read the gossip columns on the AMD Cheerleader sites ?
