Okay, finally I can agree with you. I was worried for a moment... <g>

It's nice to have our heads in the clouds thinking about how life should be, but we need to keep our feet on the ground and in touch with reality.

Absolutely right. It's fine to have opinions. I just think we should all check back periodically to verify that they really reflect reality. I don't think your values and my values are that different. I don't shoplift and you probably don't either. But how I came to that was a result of the response of my parents to my first dabbling in it. Lacking that, we can't expect the youth to spontaneously embrace it.

Clearly, the way we have been handling urban blight since the 60's is totally effed up. So how do you stop it? Locking up the criminals or preventing the formation? I believe in interventions as soon as a problem manifests itself. That means Youth at Risk programs are probably the type of thing that is needed, except that I'd say they don't go far enough. Morals and values are learned. We don't pop out of the uterus with them, we learn them. If you look at how children act (even from good homes) it is NOT with compassion as a first impulse. Hostile and violent impulses have to be checked as soon as they show up.
