But I know that I don't want too many of them running loose on the streets taking advantage of people like us

Now see, that didn't hurt... <g> we are actually talking about issues now and not rallying behind some boneheads that don't really have our interest at heart. This type of discussion is useful because rare indeed is the kid who didn't steal something once. I did, but I knew I'd get disapproval from home. Where I lived, they'd probably just call your mom and dad. I was actually more afraid of them than the law. That was fear enough because I came from a stable family. Now what if that family didn't really give a dang about whether I stole or not. I've been given a cement block to swim with (to use an earlier analogy provided by you).

Now you and I could put up "Thou shall not steal" signs up until the cows come and these guys with the crappy parents are still gonna see their friends do it and get away with it and live better than them accordingly. I'm too much of a pragmatist to say "Gee, they shouldn't feel that way" because they do feel that way. That's what they see and that's what's working where they live.

Now, if you have weeds in your lawn, you can kill 'em all. Get a bunch of chemicals and wipe 'em all out. Or you can grow things that weeds can't compete with but you want to have growing. This type of weed-free gardening represents a different approach. As an engineer it is elegant. Have nature work for you - that is my approach.

It's not namby-pamby theory, it is offering a valuable alternative. Like business incubation zones. Maybe you get your purchases without sales tax if you buy it from a place that hires At Risk Youth. Heck I'd go shop there. Would you?

It is these type of ideas that are totally absent from the political scene. The political parties don't want us discussing it because it is easier to put up straw men and have all of us joust at those than to ask for report cards. We fiddle and Rome burns.

More of us should be asking these kind of questions. I don't trust government, that's why I want people to think about government. What you think about, plan and implement, you get more of and I believe if we think about lean and efficient government and only discuss things that make sense, then that is what we get more of.
