SBC Is Going National With Its Local Service

nytimes.com

...
Now, for the first time, that truce is breaking in a big way. SBC is invading the territories of BellSouth, Verizon (which includes what used to be Bell Atlantic and Nynex) and Qwest Communications (which includes what used to be U S West). In so doing, SBC hopes to siphon $1 billion in annual revenue from its Bell brethren within two years. ...
***********

...after a visit to West 26th Street in Manhattan. There, on the ground floor of a cavernous building that SBC shares with dot-com companies and modeling agencies, among others, is a hulking Caterpillar diesel engine that has been installed to provide backup power for SBC's communications gear.

Upstairs, SBC has contracted to sublet 27,000 square feet from Williams Communications, which also provides SBC with long-distance communications capacity. This is mostly a Lucent shop. Technicians were installing a new voice telephone switch made by Lucent Technologies and were installing racks for more advanced equipment that uses a technology called asynchronous transfer mode, which helps transmit voice, video and data communications on a single network. ...
***************
...William J. Rouhana Jr., who as chairman of Winstar Communications Inc., a small competitive local communications company based in New York, has an interest in SBC's failure, predicted: "They're not serious. They will do the minimum they have to to meet the regulatory requirement they face." ...

All the best,
Michael

Zionts did say in the CC that they were looking to have G.SHDSL products out end of year or end of fiscal year(3/01). They have also said that they want to do small biz, 1-10 employees. G.SHDSL is targeted at that market.

So they haven't touted any big news about it, but we know they are working on it. Now if BT is planning on 50K G.SHDSL lines then WSTL/FT will probably get 1/2 of them in the DSLAM.

Now, when will they produce an IAD for both G.SHDSL and ADSL ? Hope to hear more details in this CC. Looks to be exciting.

There hasn't been much discussed about PAIR stuff in general, which surprised me a bit. I know that Avidia was being eyed by a major EU teleco (BT
or DT). The end result is? Haven't been following the company as much after they bot PAIR. Been enjoying the ride up until this latest correction and
SCARE WRT reduced capital spending (BS). Looks like I may have to do some homework again : ). I'll see what I can shake out WRT Avidia.

Sligthly OT - Earthlink is shipping WSTL modems in droves. Makes perfect sense since they use SBC as their carrier and SBC is shipping more
WSTL modems than EFNT. In fact, they're asking if customer XYZ wants to return their ALA modem for the newest model (WSTL), they can do so
- FREE. WSTL trading at ~12. Chart not the prettiest - but how many teleco/tech issues look good in this market? Major resistance at 30. Earnings
out 10/19. Do your own DD."
