To: Neocon who wrote (44110 ) 10/9/2000 12:50:53 AM From: ksuave Read Replies (3) | Respond to of 769667 I only hit this thread sporadically and usually become discouraged about participating in it in any prolonged manner due to the general low level of discussion. It is clear you are an intelligent guy, Neocon, and I don't doubt that one or two of the other regular contributors of conservative bent either have something on the ball or are at least sincere, but the gang of gestapos who shout down and insult Gore supporters makes consistent intelligent discourse here impossible. I'm going to bed when I finish this note and during the week I will be concentrating on the market so I probably won't follow-up on this note, but there are two observations I would like to make: 1) It is truly disturbing how supporters of the relatively mainstream, middle of the road Republican Party demonize the Democrats. The Democratic Party is also a mainstream, middle of the road party, and a huge majority of Democrats (probably the same percentage as Republicans) are good, loyal Americans who aren't Marxists, socialists, dupes or morons, and that includes both Al Gore and Bill Clinton. That there are some significant differences between the parties on certain issues is obvious, but neither party represents a significant threat to the republic per se . Although most Democrats, myself included, do not savor the idea of a Bush victory, most of us are resigned to the fact that the country would probably survive his presidency, and we would hope that it would continue to prosper. From what I read on this thread and see elsewhere, however, Republicans tend to believe that Democrats are evil incarnate hell-bent on destroying freedom and democracy in America. Despite whatever differences in ideology regarding issues such as welfare, abortion, limited gun-control, taxes, whatever . . . you couldn't be more wrong. If Bush is elected, I will grit my teeth and hope the best for America; but if what I have seen as what the average Republican response to Clinton has been for the last eight years and what I see is the attitude from most Republicans towards Gore, I know we are in for more intensive hate and fear-mongering if he is elected. It is that attitude that solidifies my support for the Democrats or at least my antipathy towards the Republicans. 2) Many Republicans define the difference between themselves and the Democrats on the issue of the size and role of government, but it is my sincere belief that the Republican establishment, if not its rank and file, is not truly interested in downsizing the power of the govt. I think they just want it to be in service of a smaller group of people, a group which doesn't necessarily include the social conservatives who's votes they are dependent upon. They may disqualify some thousands of people from various welfare roles and downsize one or two unpopular federal agencies to placate their constituency, but you are deluded if you think for a moment they would hesitate to use the powers of government to further their own interests. I personally believe that labor unions are being used by the Democratic establishment for its own purposes, and that social conservatives, which includes most of the people on this thread, are being used by the Republican establishment for its own purposes. Being loyal to your beliefs is one thing, but temper your passions and stop hating so much. RBaron (A loyal American who lives off capital gains and who will be voting for Gore)
