Me likes this part

"Carrier after carrier I've talked to in the past month have all said the same thing. In a nutshell: "Optical technology is our savior." Whether it's AT&T, Sprint or Qwest, all carriers that hope to survive through the decade are focusing on optical technology.

Perhaps these "the sky is falling" predictions would have more weight if they were more selective. Yes, there are definitely going to be some equipment makers that are going to see some hard times because of this shift to optical networking gear. While it's going to take more than a few years to happen, Sonet equipment makers will eventually have to transition product lines to all-optical portfolios. But to suggest that companies that recognized the future is coming at the speed of light, such as Cisco Systems, Nortel, Lucent and the spate of emerging optical companies, are going to have a hard time finding customers in the future is way off the mark."
