Tom: Perhaps this is the other side of the coin re: i mode's appeal. If i mode content is available directly from DoCoMo itself without any need to access either the internet or web, then DoCoMo can charge for that access.

This means, ease of access for the customer, and money for DoCoMo.

Neat, no?

i-mode business model: content providers pay fee to list on i-mode menu, i-mode collects fee. Cell phone subscriber pays monthly fee to access specific information: weather, news, sports, restaurants etc, with increased usage comes increased monthly fee, all in addition to the cell phone minutes consumed to visit the sites. i-mode user cannot link from one screen to next, must return to home page for menu options. i-mode handles all billing and deals direct with content provider and cell phone subscriber. Some purchases possible, max like a few dollars unless special arrangements, and of course i-mode takes a fee for billing from content provider. The more providers the more *Real Web-Like* the service i-mode offers. I see no reason this model cannot be adopted to faster wireless technology, unless the faster technology permits the subscriber to break out of the cage and go wherever they want to go without staying within the portal-cage....this would be the dream model of America Online, or appears to be such. This limits the competitive nature of the web and lets the system owner dictate the level of content...never mind, anyone can see what is going on here. This is the business model I read in a report, and heard it substantiated several different areas. It is not complete, only what I remember. I have not ever yet used an i-mode phone.
