Hitachi Announces 128Mbyte MultiMediaCard and 2Gbyte PC-ATA Flash Card Utilizing a New 512Mbit AND-Type Flash Memory Component October 10, 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 2000 via NewsEdge Corporation -
Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. today announced expanded capacity for its Flash memory cards by introducing a 128Mbyte MultiMediaCard(TM) and 2Gbyte Flash PC-ATA card. Both devices boast low power consumption enabled by Hitachi's new 512Mbit AND-type Flash memory and 1Gbit AND-type Flash memory components to provide an industry-leading, larger storage capacity for industrial, communication, and portable information and entertainment devices.
The 512Mbit AND-type flash memory is manufactured on a 0.18-micron process using a Multi-Level Cell (MLC) technology which achieves a smaller chip size, larger capacity and lower power consumption for Flash cards than previous versions.
The 2Gbyte PC-ATA Flash card is an effective replacement for hard disks in communications and industrial applications while the 128Mbyte Flash card meets market demand for high-density, small form factor Flash cards. These new Flash cards address the growing need for extremely high density, high-performance, rewriteable program and data storage in leading-edge products and systems, as well as in consumer devices such as smart phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld PCs, digital still and video cameras, camcorders, portable music players, pagers, toys and games.
"We are very excited to be meeting market demands for high-density, small form factor Flash cards," said Mark D'Arcangelo, product manager of non-volatile memory for Hitachi Semiconductor (America). "This announcement continues to demonstrate Hitachi's commitment to deliver leading-edge products in the rapidly growing Flash storage market."
Hitachi Flash Cards and Components Features
512Mbit AND-Type Flash Memory:
Hitachi's 512Mbit AND-type flash memory was jointly developed with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. This device is fabricated in a 0.18-micron process and takes full advantage of Multi-Level Cell technology. The read current consumption of this device is two milliamps (mA) (typical) in the range of 2.7 to 3.6 volts (V) for low power consumption of portable equipment.
1Gbit AND-Type Flash Memory:
Hitachi's 1Gbit AND-type Flash memory is achieved through the use of Hitachi's Double Density Package (DDP) technology. This technology has the ability to stack two 512Mbit AND-type Flash memory chips thereby creating a 1Gbit Flash memory component in the identical 48-pin TSOP type-one package that is currently used for Hitachi's 256Mbit and 512Mbit Flash memory components.
2Gbyte PC-ATA Card:
This product mounts 16 of Hitachi's 1Gbit AND-type Flash memory products to provide an industry-leading 2Gbyte PC-ATA card which doubles the density of Hitachi's PC-ATA card product line. Hitachi's AND-type flash memory controller implements interleaving, which is the technology of programming multiple components at the same time enabling a maximum programming speed of 2Mbytes/second.
128Mbyte MultiMediaCard:
Hitachi's new 128Mbyte MultiMediaCard incorporates two 512Mbit Flash memory chips with a cell-based integrated circuit (IC) and Hitachi's SuperH(R) 32-bit RISC microprocessor as its CPU core. This card can provide two hours of music data storage when used with a common compression technology such as MP3.
Among the fastest in the industry, these new Flash memory card products achieve a read speed of 14Mbits per second and a write speed of 5Mbits per second while operating on a low voltage of 2.7 to 3.6V. Hitachi's MultiMediaCard supports both the MultiMedia Card mode and Serial Protocol Interface (SPI) mode as required by the MultiMediaCard specification, allowing the user to select the most appropriate interface method for a specific product system design.
Hitachi's MultiMediaCards also satisfy the latest version (v2.11) of the MultiMediaCard system specification established by the MultiMediaCard Association -- the international consortium of approximately 80 companies that are driving the expanding acceptance of the MultiMediaCard specification worldwide. Like Hitachi's 16-, 32- and 64Mbyte MultiMediaCard products, the overall product specifications for the 128Mbyte card have been formulated in collaboration with Infineon Technologies AG.
Support Tools
A test and measurement instrument can assist engineers to integrate Hitachi's 16Mbyte through 128Mbyte MultiMediaCard devices into products and systems. The MultiMediaCard Protocol Analyzer(R) from Nissei Sangyo Co., Ltd., electronics division (www.nissei.com), captures the Flash cards' control and data signals, and voltage and current levels, and displays them on a host computer in real time for analysis and debug.
