Nope, Christopher, no citation. Sorry. Just one of those tidbits that got stored away in the back of my head. I think it was from one of the History Channel programs, but no promises. Not to worry though -- it won't hurt my feelings if you don't believe it. <g> However, I think that if you consider the attitudes of the ruled and the rulers of the time, it would seem quite reasonable. The emerging middle class wanted to wear the trappings of power, and the nobles didn't much like the idea. jim
