Like I said, you were right the first time. When AMD sells to Compaq, AMD registers that sale. If AMD sells to one of the distributors, then AMD does not record the sale until it is "sold through". (It is actually a bit more complicated than that but close enough for this discussion).

Chuck,

That's right. I forgot that distinction.

Harry, your point is only partially correct and my argument still stands.

Thanks, Charles, for the clarification.

Charles,

Just for the record, I got a Duron back in early July...a 750. First the chip is excellent....it runs very smoothly.

But, more importantly, it was easy to get as was the Socket A motherboard....and that was back in early summer. Even at that point, the chip was in the process of building a great reputation...so much so that the small shop that I go to was pushing them.

Finally the owner of the shop was so impressed he bought AMD stock...and this is not your typical stock investor......obviously, he's now probably underwater with his shares.

As for GTW not picking up the Duron for the holidays, I can only assume that if that's for a fact, then it has to be for some unusual reason like maybe they set up early for Xmas....that their process begins well before summer, and that's why we don't see any GTW/Duron systems. I know it can't be because of profit margins..the chips are too cheap at this point. And the MBs were available even in early July.

I recognize that this is anecdotal evidence but its not too dissimilar from others' first hand experience with the product.

While the MBs are not as plentiful as they would like, I don't think the problem is entirely AMD's fault. Just responding to some of the complaints registered on the mod thread.
