I guess I was surprised by the the size of the spread in that one poll...it was around 8%.

I guess we have blackouts in a sense. Voter tallies are not released until all the voting places are closed in the West. It wasn't like that before and they found that the people in the western states were not bothering to vote...I am sure it was the same in Canada as well.

Also you have to distinguish between the popular vote and the electoral college. There have been times when someone has won the popular vote but lost the election due to the electoral college count.
