Chaz you got it.
Also another factor is i-mode has graphics while WAP is only text. A big difference. No contest between color graphics vs Text.
Carriers have stated they aren't sure of how to profit from data, i-mode gave them the answer. 10 million subscribers in the first year and thats after putting the brakes on in signing new customers up due to capacity problems.
They may hit 20 million next year with WCDMA system.
Who will argue with that kind of success.
What carrier will not want to be part of that success and take a piece of i-mode profits.

i-mode will be more popular outside of Japan then most people think. Kids are basically the same the world over, they all love to play games and chat back and forth to each other all day. Adults will like it for the same reasons adults in Japan do. Who has the time to go searching the net when you are on the go with your mobile phone. For those that have to or want to, i-mode still gives you the ability to surf the net, the best of both worlds, where as with WAP, it's just the Net in WAP.

Ask yourself why hasn't DDI's EZWEB kicked i-modes butt. It's much faster at 64k I beleive vs 9.6. It's ease of use and content, just as you said, it's the same reason AOL kicked everyone's ass.

DOCOMO is not stupid, the one thing that confused me is why DOCOMO was paying carriers to go WCDMA/i-mode when it should be the other way around. But when you realize that DOCOMO charges by the bit the light goes on. The billions they are spending to inseminate carriers across the globe will seem like chump change when they start collecting their fee on every i-mode bit transfered in every country.
Think about it, it's not about technology it's about profits.

The best thing that can happen for us is that i-mode in WCDMA is a big success so that we collect on the Royalties due ASAP. New subscriber numbers are turning out to be anemic all over the globe, we need a new shot in the arm.
