The experience of Nazi Germany certainly does teach us that even the best-equipped armed force will not prevail if the political leadership insists on assigning it missions beyond its capacity. Does that mean that we need an armed force capable of accomplishing any imaginable task, or that we need political leaders that won't do stupid things.

We don't need an armed force capable of fighting the rest of the world simultaneously; we aren't going to do that. We don't need an armed force capable of invading Russia or China; we aren't going to do that either, unless Adm. Moorer runs for President and wins. It might be argued that we need sufficient force to successfully face any force that Russia or China might, within the realm of probability, deploy against an ally, but these contingencies are remote and becoming more so daily; neither country looks is able to deploy and support more than a tiny fraction of its forces outside its borders for any length of time, nor have they any credible reason to do so. Do remember the outcome of China's little venture in Vietnam.

many of these Chinese men will never have the opportunity to have a family due to the lack of available females (one child policy), that's a whole lot of excess manpower looking for something to do.

They will import women from Southeast and South Asia, and the men in those places, deprived of available women, will kill each other. It's already happening.

So they can't airlift their troops here. They certainly can march them west if they chose, threatening Iran and the Persian Gulf states.

I am not convinced that US military planning and budgeting should assume that US forces will be called out to protect Iran from a Chinese invasion. It may be more likely that action against alien invaders, but not by much.
