"I am not convinced that US military planning and budgeting should assume that US forces will be called out to protect Iran from a Chinese invasion."

What I worry about more is an alliance between the Chinese and the Arabs over the strife in the Mid-East...

I'm still QUITE WORRIED (and I think the market is as well) about the possibility that the Arabs may utilize the oil weapon again in order to get their way in reducing the power of Israel, if only to force the west to choose between the Jews and the Arabs.

It happened before when we were even less dependent on imported oil. Now that we even MORE dependent than we were 8 years ago (thanks to Clinton/Gore), the leverage of OPEC is even greater and they may choose to exercise it before some of the larger deposits of newly discovered oil in the Caspian are brought on line.

Even Sheikh Yamani, the former Saudi oil minister during the '70s oil embargo, indicated that they could see a renewed excess of crude oil on the market within 5 years or so that would cause prices to plunge.

So facing such a potential deterioration in economic power, they may try to seize the moment to obtain those political positions they have sought.

Combining the world's largest population with those nations controllng the lifeblood of the economy is a mighty scary thought, and a very real possibility. We already see China providing nuclear technology to Pakistan.

That's why our relations with India are so important in the region. They are the only 800 pound gorilla there that can oppose China's intentions. And they have recently signed a major weapons deal with Russia, which brings the US-India relationship into a certain amount of doubt.

Regards,

Ron
