People out west seem to be more cooperative about merging in general than back east, I think. I think there's an accepted myth about it being the obligation of the right lane to ease the process even though both parties are actually beholden to making it safe.

I'm pretty cooperative, but sometimes you get somebody who refuses to use the throttle in an effort to match speeds. It's like they're waiting for my official letter announcing that I am acquiescing to their wish to occupy "my" lane.

Actually, I'm sure mostly they are just oblivious to their surroundings. That's ok. I understand that airline pilots probably catch some z during the cruise portion of a flight. But take-offs and landings as well as freeway entries and exits should involve some conscious involvement.

Illinois State law is when turning or merging pull onto the nearest land and then when it's safe move into which lane pleases you. Now I've had people try to pass me while turning and merging. The state is wasting money handing out those Rules of the Road booklets.
