Is looking for an objective and accurate assessment of events tantamount to "resenting" the war? For too many years we have allowed revisionists to reduce our history to an extended orgy of distorted self-praise. Like all histories, ours combines nobility and selfishness, wisdom and folly, error, accident, unintended result and many other things. We have great moments to be proud of and miserable ones to learn from, but we will never learn anything from any of it if we question the patriotism of any one who point out aspects of our history that do not conform to our treasured illusions.

That's a good example of why we need a right of freedom of speech. America, love it or leave it, huh? Isn't that a little cliche?

The truth is probably much more complex than any of us know. Unless we are trying to form some kind of weird cult about our own greatness, I think America should welcome self-examination. Boy-howdy, in my book we could use it. Otherwise, we are no better than the Soviet Union was.

Everyone I've ever known who's been quoted in a newspaper, myself quoted in 3 different papers, NOT ONCE did any reporter get it right. So you expect me to believe that the story we were taught in school, 230 years removed, extracted often from letters (gee, people never exaggerate do they, or are mistaken, or just plain lie), or "primary" news sources should be believed as absolute gospel... Get real.

Are you so fused with your patriotism and national identity that you just can see that we've done things that absolutely stunk? If you want the data, go look it up or ask for a reference. That's what civilized intelligent debate is about.

ROFL
that's a really American attitude- let me paraphrase "You don't agree with MY interpretation of history (even though I'm still in elementary school) so YOU should leave the country."

I just can't stop laughing. Are you sure you know why this country is great? Are you having an "I LOVE this country more than you LOVE this country" moment? This country isn't great because our founding fathers were or were not wealthy white men with an economic stake in the outcome of the war. This country isn't great because of people who REFUSE to explore certain aspects of history, because it's "un- American". This country is great (but not perfect) because this country has managed to become one country with diverse peoples, and diverse views (even silly ones like yours), and diverse geography. It's great because of a good start (the Constitution and the separation of powers), and the smart men (most looking out for their own interests- but aren't we all? If you don't think that's true why on EARTH are you hanging out at a stock site?) who started the country and continued the country, and LUCK.

I really ought to be the one suggesting you leave the country since you clearly don't understand what freedom of speech means, for a start. But I understand that freedom of speech even encompasses persons of limited views like yourself. In fact it's a good thing you're around- as a cautionary example of what happens when cousins get a little too friendly.
