When I studied "American History" in high school we reviewed our European campaigns of the Second World War in loving detail, but without the slightest mention of the Eastern Front, or the slightest hint that the Russians were our allies. I recall mentioning in discussion that they were, and being greeted with total skepticism from other students: they could not have been our allies. They are Bad.

It amazes me as well to see how thoroughly the American colonial experiment in the Philippines has been written out of our history. I wonder how many Americans know that we once had a colony, or that we killed several hundred thousand people - some estimates range as high as two million - to get it.
