Texas does have a hate-crimes bill signed into law by Democrat Ann Richards, which increased penalties for crimes motivated by bigotry. GWB was against expanding this by adding crimes against homosexuals because it would upset his conservative consituency- a lousy reason, imo,(although I oppose hate crime legislation in general). Nonetheless, he wasn't lying about the law on the books, apparently.

He "squirmed" by pointing out that the murderers are getting the death penalty. Perfect example of liberal fascination with symbolism over substance.

Texas will make sure they never murder again, Gore quibbles they charged them with the wrong crime.

BTW, has it ever crossed your dim consciousness that the trend to Federalize the criminal code is a terrible threat to our freedom?

I get the feeling you guys like redundancy since there seems to be a problem with getting it done right the first time. Enforce what laws there are now.

The anti hate law was passed simply as a knee jerk reaction. Here is how I see a story headline as a result of that law:

"John Q. Idiot was given an extra 10 years in prison because the man he stabbed had blonde hair and blue eyes which Idiot claims to hate. This sentence comes on the heels of a 5 year sentence he received when he also stabbed the redheaded woman who accompanied the blonde man. Idiot's claim that he likes redheads resulted in the judge handing down a normal sentence"

I know.... the purpose of the law is to deter hate and bias driven crime, but people who hate to that extreme are seldom put off by stiffer sentencing. You should understand that thinking, you are the same people who oppose the death penalty claiming it's not been effective as a deterrent.

Where's the logic?

JFH

Being Hispanic does not equate with being in favor of the so called "hate crime" laws.

Americans of Hispanic ancestry throughout the United States are thinking people who can not be lumped together under one idea.

Murder is murder and needs no special laws or bills created to prosecute the perpetrators.
