(NasdaqNM:NTIQ - news), which makes software to help handle the basic plumbing of corporate computer networks, said on Thursday that software giant Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) will pay it $175 million to license its technology for managing systems based on the Windows 2000 operating system. The three-year deal also calls for Microsoft to spend $6 million in co-development funds, $5 million a year on marketing and $5 million a year in investment in NetIQ. Prior to the announcement, made in San Francisco, shares in NetIQ shot up $3-1/2, or 7 percent, to $53-1/2 on the Nasdaq before trading in the company was halted. Under the agreement, Microsoft will license NetIQ's Operations Manager technology for Windows 2000 and its new generation of server software that is forming the foundation of the company's .NET strategy to weave the Internet into all Microsoft products. The deal was aimed at making it easier for businesses to manage computer networks based on Windows, NetIQ said. ``This partnership will provide a great platform for systems management that will address growing customer demand for simplifying the management of their distributed enterprise infrastructures,'' NetIQ Chief Executive Ching-Fa Hwang said in a statement.
