Do you really think the Saudis and the Kuwaitis are going to stop shipping oil to the US because Israelis are being nasty to Palestinians?

Have you forgotten the Yom Kippur war of '73 so quickly?

They launched an oil embargo then when we were less dependent on their oil. Now that they have us by the scrotum economically, what leads you to believe that they won't seek to use it to their advantage?

And do you really believe that the Saudis won't fall in line behind Saddam Hussein if they find the US forced to fall in behind Isreal? Their Wahabbi religious leaders will DEMAND that the Saudi leadership protect the dome on the rock. And they may feel that they can control Hussein if they unleash him on Israel (better Iraqis than Saudis, right?)

And I think that's where many folks are suspecting this is eventually heading, complete Israeli dominance of Eastern Jerusalem and the temple mount. After all, the Palestinians have made great effort to desecrate Jewish holy sites like Joseph's tomb and burning down an ancient synagogue.... They may feel the only way they can preserve whatever is left is by occupying the entire city and kicking out the Palestinians.

do everything we can to help others along the road to prosperity, we will make more friends than enemies.

I'm all for free and fair trade and economic development. But you're naieve if you truly believe that everyone else wants that too... True economic progress only comes when you release authoritarian/totalitarian contol over the economy and free you people to inovate and chase their dreams. And that requires free exchange of ideas and cultural views, as well as tolerance toward others.

And that just doesn't jibe with most of these dictatorial forms of government when it threatens the power of their leadership..

Anyway... hovering all of the brinksmanship out there is the fact that Israel has a capable nuclear deterrence and if their survival is threatened, will likely use it whether it has the blessing of the US or not.

But the Arabs have to believe the Israelis are willing to go that far...

Hope your right and that cooler heads are pushing for Arafat to back down. But personally, I think it gone too far and Arafat CAN'T back down. If he does, he's history among his people. And Barak can't back down either, especially if he's calling on Sharon to rejoin his government. Thus, for the Israelis it will probably come down to kicking the Palestinians out of all of Jerusalem, locking them down in their West Bank communities and under martial law and nightly curfew. And that ain't going to go over well with the rest of the Muslim world, no matter how moderate they may be.

While you may believe I'm making too much of what's going on, I think you're underestimating the potential for escalation.

Moderate attitudes are nice, but when forced by radicalized emotions of millions of subjects into hard line stances, who will they be to oppose the will of the masses... That is, until the masses realize that they let their mouths write a check their bodies couldn't cash?

Regards,

Ron
