Steven, why is it that you focused only on the 60 year US role in the Philipines but deliberately choose to ignore the HUNDREDS OF YEARS of Spanish influence?

We were discussing the habit of excluding potentially embarrassing episodes from history lessons. I wouldn't expect US history teachers to discuss the Spanish colonial period in any great detail, as it wasn't part of our history in any specific sense. The US colonial experience was, and I think it deserves to be dealt with in US history courses.

That's all. There was no effort to blame the state of the Philippines today exclusively on us, though as the dominant influence of the last 100 years we are certainly wrapped up in that picture.
