Arafat Condemns Killing of Israelis - Diplomats

GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat told British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook early on Friday he condemned the killing of at least two captive Israeli soldiers by a Palestinian mob on Thursday, diplomats said.

Cook, who has extended a Middle East tour in response to the growing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said it was important for both sides to stop escalating the crisis and start talking.

``I am pained by the degree of bloodshed, suffering and violence,'' Cook told reporters after his 20-minute meeting with Arafat.

Diplomats said after the meeting that Arafat had told Cook he condemned the killing of at least two Israeli soldiers by the Palestinian mob in the Palestinian-ruled West Bank town of Ramallah.

Israel launched helicopter raids in response to the killings.

The diplomats also said Arafat had been ``receptive'' to the idea of attending a summit.

The Palestinian leader had been invited to a peace summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in Egypt, but diplomats also quoted Arafat as saying there could be no talks if Israel continued military action.

``The important thing before a summit is to stop the aggression against our people,'' Arafat was quoted as saying.

Cook, who conferred earlier in Jerusalem with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said they had agreed that the international community should continue to urge restraint from both Israel and the Palestinians.

``Both sides are now standing on the edge of a precipice. Their friends have to help guide them back,'' said Cook, who was due to meet Barak later on Friday.

Both Israelis and Palestinians said the spiralling violence could throttle Middle East peace efforts, as world statesmen urged both sides to stop clashes in which at least 97 people, all but seven of them Arabs, have died in the past 15 days.

RE: Arik Sharon...if you're an Israeli...you don't want him in the government after the treaties are signed. But you do indeed want him at the negotiating table when you're negotiating with the Palestinians. If you can get an agreement, or even a truce, with Sharon at the table, it will likely hold. Just like it took the very hawkish Menahem Begin to make peace with Egypt. Can't say that about Arafat...sadly, there will be no peace until he is gone. He is not an honorable man.
