Neil, to grow marketshare, and shift the mainstream consumer PC to 1+ GHz, they need to discount.

The 1.2 is nearly $500, and we may yet see an even faster part this quarter.

The silly thing is Intel's 1GHz being twice AMD's. They either cut their prices, or lose share, and they won't have any chips over 1GHz this Q to make it up on. (well maybe a week worth of P4 shipments, but I doubt there'll be much demand for it)

Neil:

"Am I the only one that thinks AMD is discounting too much? Having 1Ghz at around 50% of Intel's seems a bit silly. Why not increase margins a bit?"

Comment: AMD wants to increase the 1 gig plus percentage of its mix as fast as possible as that's the range in which competition is minimal at the moment...If demand for 1 gig plus increases rapidly enough in Q4, one might then look towards firmer pricing...perhaps even increasing prices were demand to exceed supply...but firming prices will probably have to wait Y2001 when AMD has staked out a clearly defined niche...

Neil Booth. AMD's pricing is killing INTC PC's that are below 700Mhz.

AMD's ASP's will climb or remain constant. INTC can't change pricing on there 1Ghz as they cannot produce volumes like AMD can.
